The native bee

The Canarian Dark Bee is the most precious treasure that the beekeeping from the Canary Islands has. This species, around 200.000 years ago, broke away from the African bees and have developed some genetic characteristics that make them unique. This breed has achieved an excellent adaptation to the environment and, therefore, it offers high levels of productivity and tameness, two elements of great worth as the honey productions are the sustenance of the beekeepers and the absence of aggressiveness is an essential aspect in a territory like the Canaries, where it is really difficult to fit out installations far from the population centre. The dark bee can be seen in all the islands except from Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, although the progressive importation of other foreign breeds has caused a degree of hybridization which vary by territory.
